His principle—“Entities are not to be multiplied beyond necessity”—was a rebellion against medieval scholasticism’s tangled webs of abstraction. As the Church fractured under rival popes—each justifying their authority with layers of theological jargon—Ockham’s Razor would have cut through the pretense, like so: “If God is truly omnipotent, why does He need your bureaucracy?” (His defiance would cost him; he was excommunicated in 1328, but history would prove his blade sharper than their dogma.) Born during the chaotic aftermath of the Black Death, which wiped out a third of Europe’s population, Ockham developed his philosophy in an era when grand institutions clung to complexity while failing their people. Feudal lords enforced labyrinthine land laws to squeeze starving peasants; Ockham’s insistence on minimal assumptions would have retorted: “When the plague renders your contracts void, what survives but the simplest truth—that men must eat?” Seven centuries later, we face a parallel evasion of reality: as of April 2025, NOAA data reveals atmospheric CO₂ concentrations surged at a record-breaking rate in 2024—3.75 parts per million, the highest annual jump ever recorded. Yet the Trump administration suppressed the findings, burying them in social media posts instead of the agency’s usual press releases. Here, Ockham’s Razor cuts through the noise: the simplest truth—that we are losing the fight against climate collapse—is being obscured by institutional cowardice and bureaucratic sleight-of-hand (Environmental Integrity Project 2025; Friedman 2025).

Our current predicament reveals an even deeper irony: we now spend trillions subsidizing fossil fuels while pouring billions into “high-tech renewables” that, according to J.P. Morgan’s Heliocentrism report, have increased global solar capacity without displacing fossil fuel dependence. The renewable energy revolution has become its own kind of scholasticism—a complex theology of lithium batteries, rare earth minerals, and solar panels made in coal-fired factories. These technologies, while reducing direct emissions, simply replace one form of extraction with another:

  • Cobalt mines where children work in toxic pits to power electric vehicles

  • Lithium extraction that drains Andean groundwater for grid-scale batteries

  • “Green” hydrogen projects that consume more electricity than they produce

Ockham would see this as the same old pattern: multiplying entities (new mines, new supply chains, new waste streams) rather than addressing the root problem—our refusal to reduce consumption. The J.P. Morgan report confirms this: despite $9 trillion spent on renewables since 2010, the renewable share of final energy consumption crawls forward at 0.3%-0.6% annually, while fossil fuels still power 80%-85% of industrial production (Cembalest 2025). The razor’s judgment is clear: no technology can sustain infinite growth on a finite planet.

The Jevons Paradox: Efficiency as a Trojan Horse

The report’s data exposes a brutal truth: the Jevons Paradox is alive and well. As solar and wind become cheaper, energy demand grows, swallowing efficiency gains. For example:

  • Solar capacity doubled from 2021–2024, yet fossil fuel consumption rose in absolute terms.

  • Battery storage additions (38 GW by 2027 in the U.S.) are outpaced by data center and AI energy demand, forcing utilities to add more natural gas capacity (Cembalest 2025).

This paradox undermines the core promise of renewables: that they will replace fossil fuels. Instead, they enable greater energy use, reinforcing the status quo. Ockham’s Razor demands we ask: Why layer complexity (renewables + storage + grid overhauls) when the simplest solution is to consume less?

The Collapse as a Failure of Parsimony

Modernity is a cathedral of complexity. We have built systems so convoluted that even their architects no longer understand them—financial markets that turn survival into speculation, supply chains that strangle the planet to deliver a smartphone, governments that draft climate agreements in the passive voice while approving new oil leases. Kafka’s The Trial captures this perfectly: a bureaucracy that demands participation but offers no justice, a labyrinth where every turn leads deeper into absurdity.

Consider the modern environmental movement’s obsession with “solutions” that create more problems than they solve. Carbon offset programs allow corporations to continue polluting while claiming neutrality, relying on hypothetical future carbon sequestration that may never materialize. The European Union’s taxonomy for “sustainable” energy includes natural gas and nuclear power, demonstrating how complexity serves to obscure rather than illuminate. Even renewable energy infrastructure—wind turbines, solar panels, electric vehicles—depends on global supply chains that exploit child labor in Congo’s cobalt mines and poison Indigenous lands with lithium extraction, all while failing to displace fossil fuels (European Parliament 2022; Amnesty International 2016).

Ockham would see this not as an inevitability but as a choice—a refusal to adhere to the simplest, most brutal truth: civilization is eating itself alive because it refuses to acknowledge limits. The climate crisis is not a puzzle to be solved with more complexity—more committees, more algorithms, more financial instruments—but a boundary condition to be respected. The simplest explanation for ecological collapse is that we have exceeded planetary thresholds. The simplest solution is to retreat from those thresholds. Everything else is noise.

The Myth of Industrial Agriculture’s Necessity

A common rebuttal to calls for simplification is the belief that only modern, industrial agriculture can sustain today’s population of 8 billion people. This argument, often presented as an immutable fact, is precisely the kind of unnecessary assumption Ockham’s Razor would challenge. The claim rests on several layers of complexity:

  • The assumption that current population levels are sustainable or desirable—never mind that our food system already fails to nourish billions while wasting 30-40% of what it produces (UNEP 2021).

  • The belief that yield-per-acre is the only metric that matters—ignoring that industrial farming destroys topsoil 10-100 times faster than it forms, making its “productivity” inherently temporary (Montgomery 2007).

  • The reliance on fossil fuel inputs—from synthetic fertilizers to global distribution networks, the system is fundamentally extractive.

Ockham would ask: What is the simplest way to feed people? The answer lies not in doubling down on a failing system, but in:

  • Reducing food waste (which could feed 2 billion people)

  • Shifting from grain-fed meat to regenerative practices

  • Localizing food systems to minimize transport losses (UNEP 2025)

Here, capitalism’s structural barriers emerge. The current system incentivizes waste through perverse mechanisms: supermarkets reject imperfect produce to maintain aesthetic standards; “just-in-time” supply chains discard surplus to protect prices; processed foods dominate because they’re more profitable than whole foods. Yet even within these constraints, examples of parsimony exist. France banned supermarket food waste in 2016, redirecting edible surplus to charities. South Korea’s compulsory composting program reduced food waste by 98%. These prove waste reduction is possible—but requires dismantling capitalism’s cult of artificial scarcity. The simplest solution (stop wasting food) clashes with the system’s need to manufacture demand. Ockham’s Razor thus exposes a deeper truth: our inability to reduce waste isn’t technical but ideological—a refusal to challenge the profit motive’s tyranny over basic needs.

The Fossil Fuel Paradox

Capitalism’s addiction to fossil fuels presents Ockham’s Razor with its sharpest test. The system’s survival depends on a resource that guarantees its demise—a contradiction so glaring that even the International Energy Agency acknowledges the impossibility of both maintaining growth and limiting warming to 1.5°C. The trillions spent annually subsidizing oil, gas, and coal (estimated at $7 trillion in 2025, per the IMF) aren’t an economic necessity but a political choice to preserve complexity (Black et al. 2023). These subsidies distort markets, undercut renewables, and trap nations in what anthropologist Jason Hickel calls “fossil fuel neocolonialism”—where debt forces Global South countries to exploit their own resources for foreign creditors.

The J.P. Morgan report underscores this: Europe’s “renewable transition leader” status masks its reliance on LNG imports and soaring energy prices, while the U.S. achieves “energy independence” only by doubling down on fracking (Cembalest 2025). Disentanglement would require:

  • Letting energy prices reflect reality—a carbon tax covering extraction, pollution, and health impacts would make renewables instantly competitive (oil would need to cost ~$200/barrel to account for externalities).

  • Degrowth of superfluous sectors—phasing out fossil-fueled industries like fast fashion, industrial meat, and private jets—which exist solely to fuel consumption, not meet needs.

  • Public control of utilities—as in Denmark, where community-owned wind farms bypass profit-driven energy markets.

This isn’t utopian. During WWII, the U.S. retooled its auto industry for tanks in six months. Ockham would note that our paralysis stems not from inability, but from an ideological refusal to simplify—a preference for the familiar agony of collapse over the uncertain pains of adaptation. The razor cuts through the pretense: fossil fuels sustain only capitalism’s growth imperative, not human thriving (CAN Europe 2024; Woolfenden 2023).

The Healthcare Contradiction

Modern healthcare presents a grotesque paradox under Ockham’s Razor: a system designed to heal that simultaneously sickens the very bodies and ecologies it claims to protect. The U.S. healthcare sector accounts for 8.5% of national carbon emissions—more than the entire UK economy—with single-use plastics, petrochemical-derived pharmaceuticals, and energy-guzzling hospitals as its pillars. Like industrial agriculture, this system thrives on artificial complexity:

  • Disposable medicine—a single hysterectomy generates 20 lbs of plastic waste; IV bags, syringes, and PPE are designed for landfill, not reuse. The justification—”sterility”—collapses when met with Ockham’s Razor: glass and stainless steel served hospitals for decades before the 1960s plastic boom.

  • Profit-driven waste—for-profit healthcare incentivizes overtreatment: the U.S. spends $935 billion annually on unnecessary tests and procedures, while 30 million remain uninsured (Shrank, et al. 2019). Ockham would slash this excess, asking: What is the least invasive way to achieve health? Cuba’s preventative, community-based model delivers longer life expectancy than the U.S. at 1/10th the cost.

  • Consider hospital-acquired infections: the U.S. healthcare system spends $28 billion annually treating MRSA and sepsis—diseases spread by its own unsanitary practices—while lobbying against mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios that would prevent outbreaks. Profits multiply where prevention should suffice. Ockham’s Razor dissects the madness: Why layer on costly treatments (antibiotics, extended stays) when the simplest solution—adequate staffing—would cut the problem at its root? The answer, as in Ockham’s day, is that complexity enriches systems, even as it fails those they’re built to serve.

Disentanglement would require:

  • Re-materializing medicine: Germany’s re-sterilizable surgical tools prove single-use plastics are a choice, not a necessity.

  • Degrowth of parasitic sectors: 30% of U.S. healthcare administrative costs ($1.1 trillion/year) stem from insurance bureaucracy—a complexity that serves capital, not patients.

  • The simplest solution—adequate staffing—is rejected because it dissolves the revenue stream built on treating (rather than preventing) harm. Complexity (layered treatments) persists not because it’s needed, but because it pays.

Ockham’s verdict would be brutal: a system this convoluted exists not to heal, but to profit. The razor cuts through its justifications to reveal a simpler truth—health cannot be manufactured in a dying world (Eckelman, et al. 2020; Shrank, et al. 2019).

Empiricism Over Ideology

Ockham was a nominalist, meaning he rejected abstract universals in favor of concrete, observable realities. He would have little patience for the ideological frameworks that dominate modern discourse—capitalism’s faith in “innovation,” environmentalism’s hope in “green growth,” or transhumanism’s fantasies of digital immortality. These are metaphysical constructs, untethered from the physical evidence before us: topsoil eroding ten times faster than it forms, aquifers drained beyond recovery, forests shrinking while CO₂ concentrations rise.

John Gray’s icy nihilism—his insistence that progress is a myth and collapse is inevitable—aligns somewhat with Ockham’s empiricism. But where Gray sees futility, Ockham might see clarity. The data does not demand despair; it demands adaptation. Indigenous philosophies, like the Iroquois Seventh Generation Principle, already embody this simplicity: act today with the seventh generation in mind. No need for hyperobjects or existential dread—just a direct, intergenerational contract with reality.

Modern environmental policy, by contrast, operates in a realm of abstraction. The Paris Agreement’s target of limiting warming to 1.5°C relies on speculative technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS), which has yet to be deployed at scale despite decades of research. The J.P. Morgan report mocks this as the “highest citation-to-usage ratio in the history of science,” noting that planned CCS capacity is just 2.5% of current emissions (Cembalest 2025). Ockham would dismiss such wishful thinking and focus on what we know works: reducing emissions at the source, protecting intact ecosystems, and scaling down unsustainable consumption.

Agency in an Age of Diminishing Returns

The modern world oscillates between two poles: Camus’s defiant absurdism (“we must imagine Sisyphus happy”) and Gray’s resigned realism (“entropy always wins”). Ockham offers a third path: pragmatic reduction. If the systems we’ve built are too complex to sustain, then the answer is not to build more systems (Mars colonies, AI governance) but to strip down to what is essential.

This is not a call for primitivism, but for intelligent simplification. Consider modern agriculture: a Rube Goldberg machine of synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified crops, and global supply chains that degrade soil and drain rivers. The simplest solution? Agroecology—farming methods that work with ecosystems rather than against them. No need for lab-grown meat or blockchain-tracked sustainability credits. Just observation, humility, and local adaptation.

Similarly, Ockham would dismiss the idea that we need “breakthrough technologies” to solve climate change. The simplest way to reduce emissions is to stop extracting fossil fuels. The fact that this is politically unimaginable does not make it untrue—it just reveals how deeply we’ve entangled ourselves in unnecessary complexities.

The Razor’s Edge: Between Hope and Nihilism

What, then, is Ockham’s verdict on collapse? Not despair, not optimism, but a ruthless focus on the obvious. The labyrinth of modernity—with its financialized ecosystems, its performative activism, its delusional faith in techno-fixes—is not a puzzle to be solved but a trap to be escaped. The way out is not more complexity, but less.

This is where Ockham’s Razor meets Camus’s absurdism. The rock will roll back down the hill, the glaciers will keep melting, the bureaucracies will keep churning out empty pledges. But we can choose to act in ways that align with the simplest truths: reduce harm, share resources, protect what remains. These are not grand solutions, but they are real ones—unburdened by the weight of collapsing systems.

In the end, Ockham’s greatest lesson might be this: collapse is not the problem. Denial is. The longer we multiply entities—new technologies, new policies, new ideologies—the further we stray from the only truth that matters: we are creatures of a finite world, and we must live within its limits. The razor cuts away everything else. The choice is ours.

The Madness of the Machine

The modern world is not just unsustainable—it is insane.

Consider the facts: we know fossil fuels are cooking the planet, yet we subsidize them with trillions while starving truly sustainable solutions. We watch topsoil vanish and oceans acidify, yet double down on industrial farming. We build hospitals to heal while filling them with single-use plastics that choke the biosphere. This is not rational behavior—it is the logic of a cult, one that worships complexity as a god and sacrifice as its sacrament.

Ockham’s Razor, in this light, is more than a tool—it is an intervention. The principle that “entities must not be multiplied beyond necessity” exposes modernity’s central delusion: that we can outrun collapse by adding more—more technology, more bureaucracy, more layers of abstraction between ourselves and the physical world. But insanity, as Einstein noted, is doing the same thing while expecting different results. Our systems are now so convoluted that they’ve become self-cannibalizing, like a snake eating its own tail and calling it growth.

The insanity is most visible in our rituals of false solutions:

  • Carbon offsets that let executives fly private jets guilt-free

  • “Green” products shipped across oceans in oil-burning tankers

  • Algorithms calculating “acceptable” extinction rates while ecosystems unravel

These are not mistakes. They are incantations—spells cast to ward off the simple truth that Ockham’s Razor lays bare: we must consume less, share more, and live within limits. That we refuse to do so is not because we lack alternatives (Cuba’s healthcare and Denmark’s energy grids prove otherwise), but because we’ve been conditioned to fear simplicity itself.

The razor’s true power lies in its ability to diagnose this madness. When every “solution” creates three new problems, when institutions prioritize self-preservation over function, when we’re told extinction is more plausible than economic reform—we are no longer dealing with reason, but pathology. Ockham would recognize this as medieval scholasticism reborn: a theology of obfuscation where the answer to every failure is more complexity, more deferral, more faith in systems that have already broken their promises.

There is a way out—but it requires embracing the razor’s edge. It means:

  • Calling waste by its true name: theft from the future

  • Rejecting technologies that exist only to sustain the unsustainable

  • Building lifeboats—local food networks, community clinics, mutual aid—outside the crumbling cathedral

As the 21st century unfolds into multiplying crises, Ockham’s Razor becomes more than a philosophical tool—it becomes a survival strategy. Around the world, grassroots movements are already putting this into practice: mutual aid networks that bypass broken institutions, permaculture projects that restore degraded land, communities relearning how to live within their means. These are not utopian experiments but pragmatic adaptations, grounded in the same empirical realism Ockham championed seven centuries ago.

The madness will not end gracefully. Those profiting from complexity will fight to keep their labyrinths intact. But as the walls crack, the choice becomes stark: cling to the sinking ship of business-as-usual, or grab the razor and start cutting ropes.

In the end, Ockham’s Razor offers no false comforts—only the clarifying shock of cold steel against delusion. The truth was always simple: we were never too stupid to survive, only too clever by half.

Peak Oil + Peak Phosphorus = Peak Population

This post is about a resource that is not discussed much, but whose importance to our survival is paramount. It was named one of the top six natural resources most depleted by human usage. All living organisms, including bacteria, require phosphorus in order to live. Modern industrial farming is dependent on phosphorus, and industrial civilization’s primary supply for this vital nutrient is phosphate rock, a finite and nonrenewable resource which cannot be synthesized or created in a lab:

…Just like oil, phosphorus cannot be replaced or artificially manufactured. It can only be recycled through the application of organic matter. However, since urban areas started to use flush toilets, phosphorus was no longer returned to the soil, but washed out into water systems. The use of the local organic matter was then replaced by phosphate rock, which has to be mined or drilled out from the deep soil.

According to Petter Jensen, professor at the University of Biotechnology and Environment in Oslo, phosphorus will soon be a rare and valuable resource. He has been analysing phosphorous production for more than twenty years, and concluded that based on the data available, it is clear that the alarm bells should be ringing…

 
Cheap energy has allowed humans to extract increasingly greater amounts of phosphate rock in order to propel the ‘Green Revolution’ and support the explosion of world population over the last six decades.

…The world’s reliance on phosphorus is an unappreciated aspect of the “Green Revolution,” a series of agricultural innovations that made it possible to feed the approximately 4.2 billion-person increase in the global population since 1950. This massive expansion of global agricultural production required a simultaneous increase in the supply of key resources, including water and nitrogen. Without an increase in phosphorus, however, crops would still have lacked the resources necessary to fuel a substantial increase in production, and the Green Revolution would not have gotten off the ground…

As you can see from the following graphs, the increase of the global population tracks with that of oil production and the mining of phosphate rock:

Now if “Hubbert Linearization” is used to predict the ultimate recoverable amount of mined phosphate rock, then we get a graph like the one created by the Global Phosphorus Research Initiative (GPRI):

The GPRI estimates the peak of phosphorus to occur around 2033. As with many other commodities, oil plays an important part in the price of phosphate rock. In the following graph, the spike in phosphate rock price coincides with the oil price spike of 2008. That same year China also imposed a temporary export tariff of 135% on their reserves:

The concept and analysis of peak phosphorus is based on the following premises:

1. Phosphate rock is a finite resource that takes 10s to 100s of millions of years to cycle or ‘renew’ naturally;

2. Phosphate rock is a non-homogenous resource, where the higher quality, more easily accessible layers are mined first;

3. As a result of 1 and 2 above, this means that over time, the average quality of phosphate rock is deceasing, in terms of P2O5 percentage (and also the increasing presence of impurities and heavy metals). This is also supported by empirical evidence;

4. Premise 3 means that increasing energy, resources, and costs are required per unit output of nutrient. That is, to extract the same nutrient content (e.g., P2O5) over time requires increasing inputs;

5. Premise 3 also means that extracting the same nutrient output generates more waste byproducts;

6. While the short and medium term costs may fluctuate due to short term changes in demand or improvements in production methods, over the long term costs and energy inputs will increase, and indeed will increase not linearly, but exponentially as ore concentrations decline and will require an increasing amount of phosphate rock to be mined. Observable changes over time typically occur once approximately 50% of the resource has been consumed;

7. While there may be some fluctuations causing year-to-year variation in phosphate production (due to supply-side or demand-side variables, there will always be a global demand for phosphorus, as argued in section 2);

8. This means at some critical point, the increasing annual production of phosphate rock will become unviable due to increasing energy, economic and other constraints, while demand will continue to increase.

A key significance of peak phosphorus analysis is that the critical point in time is not when 100% of the reserves are depleted, but much sooner than this. This means, preparing for a soft-landing will need to take this timeline into account, given that most measures (such as those outlined later in section 7 and [40]) will take decades to be implemented. It must be re-iterated here that farmers need both annual and long-term access to phosphorus fertilizers in order to achieve high crop yields. If no action is taken decades before the anticipated peak, a hard-landing response to peak phosphorus is likely to result in a situation of:

• increased energy and raw material consumption;

• increased production, processing and transport costs;

• increased generation of waste and pollution;

• further short-term price spikes;

• long-term trend of increased mineral phosphate prices;

• increased geopolitical tensions;

• reduced farmer access to fertilizer markets;

• reduced global crop yields; and

• increased global hunger.

Key factors likely to contribute to a net increasing future demand for phosphorus include:

 increased population growth (9 billion expected by 2050) causing a surge in food demand;

 per capita increased phosphorus demand due to changing dietary preferences towards more meat and dairy products (especially in growing economies like China and India), which require significantly more phosphorus fertilizer per capita.

 increasing demand for non-food crops like biofuels (energy crops require substantial amounts of phosphorus fertilizers to ensure high crop growth) or lithium-iron-phosphate electric vehicle batteries, which can require 60 kg of phosphate per battery;

 The need to boost soil fertility in phosphorus-deficient regions. Industry projections of demand are often based on the current market demand, that is, those players with purchasing power. However there is a large ‘silent’ demand from poor farmers with phosphorus-deficient soils that cannot currently access fertilizer markets. In Sub-Saharan Africa for example, where at least 30% of the population is undernourished, fertilizer application rates are extremely low and 75% of agricultural soils are nutrient deficient thus yields are falling.

While improvements in efficiency in phosphorus recovery from mining may decrease demand for phosphate rock, it is likely that the factors placing upward pressure on demand would still outweigh these efficiency gains.

Only a couple of countries hold the majority of phosphate rock. Interestingly, upon joining the World Trade Organization, China’s reported reserves doubled overnight. Like Saudi Arabia’s dubious stated oil reserves, China’s commercial interests and lack of transparency appear to have muddied a true accounting of their phosphate rock reserves.

Morocco, known as the ‘Saudi Arabia of phosphate’, is the major source on the market. If you speak to anyone from that country involved in their phosphate industry, they will tell you there’s no problem with supply. Similarly, the Saudis swear that they can meet the needs of the world oil market far into the distant future. Experts on the global extraction of phosphate rock are not swayed by reassurances from industry suppliers:

Author of the report ‘A rock and a hard place: Peak phosphorus and the threat to our food security’, Dr. Isobel Tomlinson, has said:
“A radical rethink of how we farm, what we eat and how we deal with human excreta, so that adequate phosphorus levels can be maintained without reliance on mined phosphate, is crucial for ensuring our future food supplies.

Competing with our food supply’s need for phosphates are biofuels whose production also requires large amounts of the nutrient. Biofuel from algae is the latest proposal to solve our liquid fuel needs, but according to Professor Chris Rhodes, phosphate is the Achilles’ heel of biofuels and it’s not feasible to replace global oil consumption with biofuels:

World rock phosphate production amounts to around 140 million tonnes. In comparison, we would need 352 million tonnes of the mineral to grow sufficient algae to replace all the oil-derived fuels used in the world.2 The US produces less than 40 million tonnes of rock phosphate annually, but to become self-sufficient in algal diesel would require around 88 million tonnes of the mineral. Hence, for the US, security of fuel supply could not be met by algae-to-diesel production using even all its indigenous rock phosphate output, and significant further imports would be needed. This is in addition to the amount of the mineral necessary to maintain existing agriculture. In principle, phosphate could be recycled from one batch of algae to the next, but how exactly this might be done remains a matter of some deliberation. e.g. The algae could be dried and burned, and the phosphate extracted from the resulting “ash”, or the algae could be converted to methane in a biodigester, releasing phosphate in the process. Clearly there are engineering and energy costs attendant to any and all such schemes and none has been adopted as yet…

“Personalised transport (cars) will be largely a thing of the past.” says Professor Rhodes.

Now if we can just get rid of all the world’s cars and retrofit all the toilets to recycle the global human population’s urea and feces, then maybe we’ll have a chance to survive. Oh yeah, I forgot about that climate change problem.

Speaking on climate change in the video above is Sir Robert Watson, retiring chief scientist at Britian’s Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs. He is warning that governments cannot afford to do nothing about greenhouse gas emissions, irrespective of the current state of the economy. He says the hope of restricting the average global temperature rise to 2C is “out the window”.

If we continue the way we are, we’ve got a 50-50 shot of a 3 degree [Celcius] world – and I would not rule out a 5 degree [Celcius] world.

Hell on Earth is coming to a reality near you:

Here’s the edition of the Royal Society journal that came out of the conference on 4 degrees C of warming. Read through it and see if you think “hell on earth” is an exaggeration. Desertification, water shortages, agricultural disruptions, rising sea levels, vanishing coral, tropical forest die-offs, mass species extinctions, oh my. Kevin Anderson, one of the lead scientists involved, was moved to say that “a 4 degrees C future is incompatible with an organized global community, is likely to be beyond ‘adaptation’, is devastating to the majority of ecosystems, and has a high probability of not being stable.” ~ Grist

A new article in the Journal “Nature” reports an ominous finding that far more carbon dioxide and methane are being released from parts of Arctic Siberia than previously thought.

The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports that lack of sea ice could drive heat up to 900 miles further inland and cause the melting of permafrost. Most scientists agree that is a recipe for runaway global warming. From the findings of the NCAR/NSIDC Study:

The findings point to a link between rapid sea ice loss and enhanced rate of climate warming, which could penetrate as far as 900 miles inland. In areas where permafrost is already at risk, such as central Alaska, the study suggests that periods of abrupt sea ice loss can lead to rapid soil thaw.

Thawing permafrost may have a range of impacts, including buckled highways and destabilized houses, as well as changes to the delicate balance of life in the Arctic. In addition, scientists estimate that Arctic soils hold at least 30 percent of all the carbon stored in soils worldwide. While scientists are uncertain what will happen if this permafrost thaws, it has the potential to contribute substantial amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Arid regions will become much more dry, and wet regions will experience much more rain due to the warming planet, according to scientists:

A paper in Science today finds rapidly changing ocean salinities as a result of a warming atmosphere have intensified the global water cycle (evaporation and precipitation) by an incredible 4 percent between 1950 and 2000. That’s twice the rate predicted by models.

These same models have long forecast that dry areas of Earth will become drier and wet areas wetter in a warming climate—an intensification of the water cycle driven mostly by the capacity of warmer air to hold and redistribute more moisture in the form of water vapor…

…But the rate of intensification of the global water cycle is happening far faster than imagined: at about 8 percent per degree Celsius of ocean warming since 1950.

At this rate, the authors calculate:

The global water cycle will intensify by a whopping 16 percent in a 2°C warmer world

The global water cycle will intensify by a frightening 24 percent in a 3°C warmer world

…The changes will not be uniform across the globe, but trend toward increased drying of arid areas and increased flooding of wet areas.

And the resulting changes in freshwater availability are likely to be far more destabilizing to human societies and ecosystems than warming alone.

“Changes to the global water cycle and the corresponding redistribution of rainfall will affect food availability, stability, access, and utilization,” says lead author Paul Durack at the University of Tasmania and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

When dealing with a crisis that threatens the very existence of the human species, a rational society would not put the issues of cost-effectiveness and inconveniences to the economy above all else as the deciding factors for taking action. But that is what we are doing, allowing the “ALMIGHTY MARKET” to decide our fate. As explained in another post, this deference to “THE MARKET” to solve such a seemingly abstract problem like climate change is essentially condemning our children to a horrible fate. Climate change is not going to respect or accommodate ‘THE MARKET’, our lifestyle, and mankind’s hubris; it will just wipe us right off the face of the Earth like the pesky and bothersome vermin we have become.

You only have to look at the following graph(click to enlarge) from the BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2012 to understand how much industrial civilization is locked in to fossil fuels. Do you see that thin dark orange line just below the grey band representing coal? Yeah, that’s renewables.

We are so overly dependent on the high energy density of fossil fuels that the system resists change, with those in charge of it even spending large sums of money to alter public perception on the pernicious effects of burning these CO2-emitting energy sources. The advantages of hydrocarbons, summarized by Tom Murphy, have lured us into drinking an addictive and poisonous elixir:

Fossil fuels are cheap and reliable and are their own storage and allow transportation by car, truck, ship, airplane, and fit seamlessly into our current infrastructure.


Reasons for why carbon emissions will continue their upward trend are described in this article:

• About 80% of the power stations likely to be in use in 2020 are either already built or under construction, the IEA found. Most of these are fossil fuel power stations unlikely to be taken out of service early, so they will continue to pour out carbon – possibly into the mid-century. The emissions from these stations amount to about 11.2Gt, out of a total of 13.7Gt from the electricity sector. These “locked-in” emissions mean savings must be found elsewhere.

“It means the room for manoeuvre is shrinking,” warned Birol.

• Another factor that suggests emissions will continue their climb is the crisis in the nuclear power industry. Following the tsunami damage at Fukushima, Japan and Germany have called a halt to their reactor programmes, and other countries are reconsidering nuclear power.

“People may not like nuclear, but it is one of the major technologies for generating electricity without carbon dioxide,” said Birol. The gap left by scaling back the world’s nuclear ambitions is unlikely to be filled entirely by renewable energy, meaning an increased reliance on fossil fuels.

• Added to that, the United Nations-led negotiations on a new global treaty on climate change have stalled. “The significance of climate change in international policy debates is much less pronounced than it was a few years ago,” said Birol…

…Sir David King, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government, said the global emissions figures showed that the link between rising GDP and rising emissions had not been broken. “The only people who will be surprised by this are people who have not been reading the situation properly,” he said.

Forthcoming research led by Sir David will show the west has only managed to reduce emissions by relying on imports from countries such as China.

Another telling message from the IEA’s estimates is the relatively small effect that the recession – the worst since the 1930s – had on emissions…

And what about that country that, to the shock of many, surpassed the U.S. in carbon emissions 3 years ago?:

In 2009 China consumed 96.9 quads. In 2012 their total is estimated to reach 110.7. That’s a compound annual growth rate of 4.54%. That’s twice as fast as the DOE has predicted going forward.

I’ll remind readers that my estimate for energy consumption in 2035 for China is 247 quads–more than twice what the DOE estimates. Recent growth supports my higher estimates.

Even if China succeeds in building the 150 nuclear plants they aspire to over the next 50 years, they will still be burning more coal in 2035 than the entire world burns now.

The Chinese economy, as I predicted, will start to struggle and even sputter at times between now and then. But if the history of other developing countries is any example, that won’t affect energy consumption nearly as much as one might think. In the United States, that Great Depression? Didn’t affect our energy consumption curve. – link

Lastly, how are we doing on transitioning away from our greenhouse gas emitting, industrial agriculture model of food production? As Stuart Staniford conjectured in his essay ‘Fallacy of Reversibility‘, industrial agriculture has become even more dominant in the age of peak oil, but with adverse effects to the environment:

…The farm bill is not only the centerpiece of United States food and agriculture policy, it is also a de facto climate bill. And in this respect, both the Senate and House versions of the legislation are a disaster waiting to happen…

…The proposed farm bill — Senate- or House-style, take your pick — would make American agriculture’s climate problem worse, in two ways. Not only would the bill accelerate global warming by encouraging more greenhouse gas emissions, it would make the nation’s farms more vulnerable to the impacts of those emissions…

…Except in a technical aside, neither the bill passed by the Senate or by the House Committee on Agriculture even mentions climate change.

Coal and cars are blamed, but agriculture is also a major contributor to global warming: by some estimates, it accounts for roughly a third of emissions globally. The industrialized, meat-heavy food system of the United States takes a heavy toll on the atmosphere; it takes an enormous amount of fossil fuel to run farm equipment and harvest the mountains of corn that fatten livestock. And most fertilizers contain nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas 298 times more potent than carbon dioxide over a century.

Both of the farm bill proposals would maintain agriculture’s large climate footprint, mainly by continuing to skew subsidies toward a mere handful of commodity crops. The “big five” — wheat, rice, soybeans, cotton and above all corn — have received 84 percent of subsidies since 2004, according to the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy group critical of the practice. Subsidies increase with output, encouraging farmers to run highly mechanized operations that plant “fence row to fence row” and apply oceans of fertilizer and pesticide, all of which boost emissions.

But industrial agriculture’s ability to produce gargantuan amounts of food also makes it exceptionally susceptible to climate change. Relying on vast monocultures — the miles and miles of cornfields one passes when driving in Iowa — captures economies of scale. But that lack of diversity invites trouble. A monoculture’s uniformity means that if temperatures spike or a new pest arrives, the damage is likely to spread throughout the entire planted area. By contrast, the diversified landscapes of organic agriculture — corn planted between, say, other vegetables and chicken pens — tend to limit damage.

Farmers can best boost resilience to climate change, scientists say, by improving their soil’s fertility and capacity to retain moisture. That means cutting back on chemical fertilizers, which kill many of the microorganisms that ventilate soil, and shifting to compost and manure fertilizers and crop rotations.

Instead, leading lobbyists for agribusiness want to retain the current production system but shift the mounting climate risks to the taxpayer. Both versions of the farm bill would expand the $11 billion crop insurance program, a move championed by the National Corn Growers Association. The Senate bill, for instance, would authorize $3.8 billion a year for additional insurance.

But neither version would require farmers to take other measures to reduce their climate vulnerability, like investing in healthier soil. In fact, the draft bills would actually make it harder for farmers to do that because the expanded crop insurance would be paid for by cutting the Conservation Stewardship Program, which helps farmers improve their land’s ecological health…

So it looks like we are going balls out in our race toward oblivion. A technologically advanced civilization, once known for sending spacecrafts to distant planets, looks to be headed toward a bleak existence of huddling in subterranean caves and scavenging for insects to eat.

In my post “The Vicious Price/Demand Cycle of Peak Oil & Blackouts in Greece” I mentioned the global land grabs occurring, primarily in Third World countries, by corporations and ‘developed’ countries in order to secure the resources to feed their nation’s citizens and extract profit. These resource appropriations take place at the expense of local, indigenous people who have farmed the land in a sustainable way for centuries if not thousands of years. The bottom line of these land grabs is to get control of the water resources connected to the land. The non-profit organization called GRAIN published an excellent article today explaining this theft in great detail. I highly recommend reading it in its entirety. Also worth reading is “The Land Grabbers: The New Fight Over Who Owns the Earth” by Fred Pearce, an excerpt of which was published today at Salon.com.

Although all the countries who practice industrial monoculture farming and factory farming are unsustainable and depleting their fresh water resources faster than they are being replenished by natural rainwater/snowmelt, Saudi Arabia is the most severe example:

…perhaps the situation is nowhere more dramatic than in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia has no rain or rivers to speak of, but possesses vast ‘fossil water’ aquifers beneath the desert. During the 1980s the Saudi government invested $40 billion of its oil revenues to pump this precious water to irrigate a million hectares of wheat. Later, in the 1990s, in order feed the growing industrial dairy farms that popped up across the desert, many farmers switched to alfalfa, a crop that needs even more water. It was clear that the miracle couldn’t last; the aquifers soon collapsed and the government decided to outsource its food production to Africa and other parts of the world instead. Some 60% of the country’s fossil water under the desert was squandered in the process. Gone and lost forever.

As Saudi Arabia uses its oil wealth to procure resources abroad, so is China doing the same with the wealth generated from its success as an exporter and the huge trade surplus it has built up:

More than 40% of the Earth’s land is used for human needs, including cities and farms; and with the population set to grow by a further two billion by 2050, that figure could soon exceed 50%. Rising demand for resource-expensive foods such as beef could mean it happens by 2025, Prof Barnofsky’s modelling suggests. “It really will be a new world, biologically, at that point,” he said. “I think that if we want to avoid the most unpleasant surprises, we want to stay away from the 50% mark.

Reading about these land grabs by resource hungry wealthy countries who practice industrialized farming makes me think of the following quote and how little time we have left before mass starvation on a global scale occurs:

Is Our Agricultural System About to Collapse? 

I’ve written before about what exactly it means to have an unsustainable agricultural system: If our current system doesn’t change, then one day it will collapse, and millions — if not billions — will starve. This collapse won’t have been unprecedented; it may, in fact, be an almost inevitable part of a cycle of growth and devastation that humanity has been experiencing since the agricultural revolution, as described in a new book, Empires of Food, by the academic Evan D. G. Fraser and the journalist Andrew Rimas.

The book analyzes the agricultural system in places and time periods from Mesopotamia to Rome to the Middle Ages and beyond. It chronicles a disturbingly reliable pattern of agricultural innovation, expansion, and trade that accompanies periods of favorable weather (just as we’ve experienced for the past half-century) and then the horrific implosion of the food system (and the civilization that built it) that always follows because of soil erosion, overpopulation, and climate change. Economic troubles caused by unsound banking practices also usually figure prominently in the demise. Does any of this sound eerily familiar?

What follows are excerpt from the GRAIN article:

Concerning the real reason for the land grabs: Water

“The tensions in south western Ethiopia illustrate the central importance of access to water in the global land rush. Hidden behind the current scramble for land is a world-wide struggle for control over water. Those who have been buying up vast stretches of farmland in recent years, whether they are based in Addis Ababa, Dubai or London, understand that the access to water they gain, often included for free and without restriction, may well be worth more over the long-term, than the land deals themselves.

In recent years, Saudi Arabian companies have been acquiring millions of hectares of lands overseas to produce food to ship back home. Saudi Arabia does not lack land for food production. What’s missing in the Kingdom is water, and its companies are seeking it in countries like Ethiopia.

Indian companies like Bangalore-based Karuturi Global are doing the same. Aquifers across the sub-continent have been depleted by decades of unsustainable irrigation. The only way to feed India’s growing population, the claim is made, is by sourcing food production overseas, where water is more available.

“The value is not in the land,” says Neil Crowder of UK-based Chayton Capital which has been acquiring farmland in Zambia. “The real value is in water.” [1]

And companies like Chayton Capital think that Africa is the best place to find that water. The message repeated at farmland investor conferences around the globe is that water is abundant in Africa. It is said that Africa’s water resources are vastly under utilised, and ready to be harnessed for export oriented agriculture projects.

The reality is that a third of Africans already live in water-scarce environments and climate change is likely to increase these numbers significantly. Massive land deals could rob millions of people of their access to water and risk the depletion of the continent’s most precious fresh water sources.

All of the land deals in Africa involve large-scale, industrial agriculture operations that will consume massive amounts of water. Nearly all of them are located in major river basins with access to irrigation. They occupy fertile and fragile wetlands, or are located in more arid areas that can draw water from major rivers. In some cases the farms directly access ground water by pumping it up. These water resources are lifelines for local farmers, pastoralists and other rural communities. Many already lack sufficient access to water for their livelihoods. If there is anything to be learnt from the past, it is that such mega-irrigation schemes can not only put the livelihoods of millions of rural communities at risk, they can threaten the freshwater sources of entire regions. (See Water mining, the wrong type of farming and Death of the Aral Sea)”

In the not-so-distant future, water will become “the single most important physical-commodity based asset class, dwarfing oil, copper, agricultural commodities and precious metals,” says Citigroup’s chief economist, Willem Buiter.

Hydro-colonialism?

The Nile and the Niger basins are only two of the examples of the massive give away of land and water rights. The areas where land grabbing is concentrated in Africa coincide closely with the continent’s largest river and lake systems, and in most of these areas irrigation is a prerequisite of commercial production.

The Ethiopian government is constructing a dam in the Omo river, to generate electricity and irrigate a huge sugarcane plantation; a project that threatens hundreds of thousands of indigenous people that depend on the river further downstream. It also threatens to empty the world biggest desert lake, Lake Turkana, fed by the Omo river. In Mozambique the government had signed off on a 30,000 hectares plantation along the Limpopo river which would have directly affected farmers and pastoralists now depending on the water. The project was revoked because the investor didn’t deliver, but the government is looking for others to take over. In Kenya, a tremendous controversy has arisen from the government’s plans to hand out huge areas of land in the delta of the Tana River with disastrous implications for the local communities depending on the delta’s water. The already degraded Senegal river basin and its delta have been subject to hundreds of thousands of hectares in land deals, putting foreign agribusiness in direct competition for the water with local farmers. The list goes on, and is growing by the day. This table shows a selection of the most important cases.

Peter Brabeck-Letmathe, the Chairman of Nestle, says that these deals are more about water than land: “With the land comes the right to withdraw the water linked to it, in most countries essentially a freebie that increasingly could be the most valuable part of the deal.”[8] Nestle is a leading marketer of bottled water under brand names including Pure Life, Perrier, S.Pellegrino and a dozen others. It has been charged with illegal and destructive groundwater extraction, and of making billions of dollars in profits on cheap water while dumping environmental and social costs onto communities. [9]

Asked at an agricultural investment conference whether it is possible to make money from water, Judson Hill of one of the private equity funds involved, was unequivocal: “Buckets, buckets of money,” he told a meeting of bankers and investors in Geneva. “There are many ways to make a very attractive return in the water sector if you know where to go.”

In the not-so-distant future, water will become “the single most important physical-commodity based asset class, dwarfing oil, copper, agricultural commodities and precious metals,” says Citigroup’s chief economist, Willem Buiter.[10] No surprise, then, that so many corporations are rushing to sign land deals that give them wide-ranging control over African water. Especially when African governments are essentially giving it away. Corporations understand what’s at stake. There are “buckets of money” to be made on water, if only it can be controlled and turned it into a commodity. (See Virtual water  and Grabbing carbon credits?)

The secrecy that shrouds land deals makes it hard to know exactly what’s being handed over to foreign companies. But from those contracts that have been leaked or made public, it is apparent that the contracts tend not to contain any specific mention of water rights at all, leaving the companies free to build dams and irrigation canals at their discretion, sometimes with a vague reference to ‘respecting water laws and regulations’.[11]  This is the case in the agreements signed between the Ethiopian government and both Karuturi and Saudi Star in Gambela, for example. In some contracts,  a minor user fee is agreed upon for the water, but without any limitation on the amount of water that can be withdrawn. Only in rare cases are even minimal restrictions imposed during the dry season, when access to water is so critical for local communities. But even in instances where governments may have the political will and capacity to negotiate conditions to protect local communities and the environment, this is made increasingly difficult due to existing international trade and investment treaties that give foreign investors strong rights in this respect.[12]”

Stop the water grab

If this land and water grab is not put to an end, millions of Africans will lose access to the water sources they rely on for their livelihoods and their lives. They may be moved out of areas where land and water deals are made or their access to traditional water sources may simply be blocked by newly built fences, canals and dikes. This is already happening in Ethiopia’s Gambela, where the government is forcibly moving thousands of indigenous people out of their traditional territories to make way for export agriculture. By 2013, the government wants to remove 1.5 million people from their territories across Ethiopia.[13] As the bulldozers move into the newly acquired lands, this will become an increasingly common feature in Africa’s rural areas, generating more tensions and conflicts over scarce water resources.

But the impacts will run far beyond the immediately affected communities. The recent wave of land grabbing is nothing short of an environmental disaster in the making. There is simply not enough water in Africa’s rivers and water tables to irrigate all the newly acquired land. If and when they are put under production, these 21st century industrial plantations will rapidly destroy, deplete and pollute water sources across the continent. Such models of agricultural production have generated enormous problems of soil degradation, salinisation and waterlogging wherever they have been applied. India and China, two shining examples that Africa is being pushed to emulate, are now in a water crisis as a result of their Green Revolution practices. Over 200 million people in India and 100 million in China depend on foods produced by the over-pumping of water.[14] Fearing depleted water supplies or perhaps depleted profits, companies from both countries are looking now to Africa for future food production.

Africa is in no shape for such an imposition. More than one in three Africans live with water scarcity, and the continent’s food supplies are set to suffer more than any other’s from climate change. Building Africa’s highly sophisticated and sustainable indigenous water management systems could help resolve this growing crisis, but these are the very systems being destroyed by land grabs.

Advocates of the land deals and mega irrigation schemes argue that these big investments should be welcomed as an opportunity to combat hunger and poverty in the continent. But bringing in the bulldozers to plant water-intensive export crops is not and cannot be a solution to hunger and poverty. If the goal is to increase food production, then there is ample evidence that this can be most effectively done by building on the traditional water management and soil conservation systems of local communities. [15] Their collective and customary rights over land and water sources should be strengthened not trampled.

But this is not about combating hunger and poverty. This is theft on a grand scale of the very resources – land and water – which the people and communities of Africa must themselves be able to manage and control in order to face the immense challenges they face this century.
