The Species That Cannot Stop

A commenter calling himself Mistah Charley recommended Warren M. Hern’s Homo Ecophagus after reading one of my essays on collapse. In his comment, he mentioned Tom Murphy, the self-described “recovering astrophysicist” who has described modernity as metastatic: a system that spreads through, consumes, and ultimately threatens the larger body that sustains it. Mistah Charley wondered whether modernity might outlive us in some form—whether the industrial and technical machinery we have built might survive longer than the ecological stability, social trust, and human security that once made that machinery seem like progress. His comment was neither a prophecy nor a declaration of certainty. He wrote, “I could be wrong.” But its bleak intuition stayed with me: our society is composed of “hungry, hungry humans,” and the people with the greatest power often appear to be the hungriest.

Hern is an unusual figure to make such an argument. A physician with an M.D., an M.P.H., and a Ph.D. in epidemiology, as well as an adjunct appointment in anthropology at the University of Colorado Boulder, he has spent decades working at the intersection of medicine, public health, demography, and ecological observation. His long field experience among the Shipibo people of the Peruvian Amazon, along with his research on fertility and population, informs a book that approaches environmental devastation not as a distant abstraction but as a clinical problem: a process with causes, manifestations, a diagnosis, and a prognosis. The medical language of Homo Ecophagus—malignancy, host, invasive growth, and terminal change—is therefore not simply rhetorical. To describe the human transformation of the biosphere with diagnostic seriousness, Hern draws on pathology, ecology, thermodynamics, and urban geography, assembling a vocabulary that includes Homo ecophagus, malignant entropy, the ecophagic imperative, and topophagic growth: the consumption of physical space by expanding cities, extraction, and infrastructure.

Hern’s Homo Ecophagus begins from an accusation that is almost unbearable because it is so direct: humanity has become a species that devours its own ecological foundation. The name Hern gives us—Homo ecophagus, the human who consumes the ecosystem—is more than a provocation. It is a diagnosis. It suggests that the central problem of the human future is not climate change alone, not overpopulation alone, not capitalism alone, not technology alone, nor even the extinction crisis considered by itself. The deeper problem is that human culture has developed into a system that treats the living world as fuel for its own multiplication.

That system is dangerous not merely because it is destructive, but because it is self-reinforcing. It turns forests into pasture, soils into yield, water into industrial input, animals into protein, mountains into minerals, rivers into waste channels, and atmospheric stability into an invisible subsidy for economic growth. It then treats the temporary abundance produced by this conversion as evidence of success. The more efficiently civilization consumes the foundations of life, the more powerful it appears—until the systems that made its power possible begin to fail. Hern’s ecological diagnosis gives substance to the intuition behind Murphy’s metastatic modernity and Mistah Charley’s image of an endlessly hungry society: growth ceases to be a sign of health when it proceeds by consuming the conditions of its own survival.

The future of mankind will depend on whether this system can be interrupted. If it cannot, humanity may not vanish in one spectacular apocalypse. It may instead continue in a more disturbing form: technologically sophisticated, ecologically impoverished, politically divided, and increasingly unable to provide ordinary people with the conditions required for a decent life. The great question is not whether humans will remain clever. We almost certainly will. The question is whether intelligence can become wisdom before intelligence is reduced to a tool for administering the consequences of our own excess.

Mistah Charley ended with a contemporary, gently humorous paraphrase of Micah 6:8: “act justly, love tenderly, and don’t get too puffed up.” It is an ethic of humility sharply opposed to the ecophagic arrogance Hern describes. It does not answer Hern’s diagnosis, but it establishes the moral disposition required to confront it. It rejects the fantasies of technological escape, private exemption, and endless growth; just as importantly, it rejects the self-flattering belief that recognizing a destructive system places one outside it. The task is not individual purity. It is to decide whether human intelligence, wealth, and collective power will be used to extend the ecophagic process—or to restrain it and preserve the living world on which every human future depends.

The Logic of Ecophagy

Environmental discussion often begins with a familiar vocabulary: pollution, emissions, deforestation, plastic, biodiversity loss, waste, and overconsumption. These terms are accurate, but they can obscure the scale of what is happening. They make planetary transformation appear to be a collection of separate problems—an emissions problem here, a forest problem there, an ocean problem elsewhere. Hern’s achievement is to insist that these are manifestations of a single process.

The process is ecophagy: the transformation of ecosystems into material support for continued human expansion. In Hern’s account, humanity does not merely inhabit landscapes. It reorganizes them. It converts complex, self-sustaining ecological systems into simplified human systems: farms, roads, suburbs, mines, reservoirs, feedlots, plantations, industrial zones, shipping corridors, power systems, and expanding urban regions. The more complex and biologically rich a place is, the more vulnerable it may be to this conversion, because the economic system recognizes its complexity chiefly as unrealized value.

A forest becomes timber, grazing land, carbon credits, mineral access, tourist scenery, or future development. A river becomes irrigation, hydroelectric capacity, transportation, waste disposal, or water for distant cities. An animal becomes a commodity, a nuisance, or an obstacle to human use. Even people can be reduced in similar ways: workers become labor inputs, communities become tax bases, and entire regions become resource frontiers. The logic is expansive because it recognizes few limits beyond those imposed by price, law, physical exhaustion, or resistance.

Hern’s cancer metaphor illuminates the danger of that logic. A malignant tumor is not evil in a moral sense. It is a growth that has lost its regulatory relationship to the organism in which it exists. It expands, invades adjacent tissue, establishes distant sites of growth, consumes resources, and continues until the host can no longer sustain it. Hern argues that human civilization increasingly exhibits comparable characteristics: uncontrolled growth, spatial invasion, colonization of distant ecosystems, standardization of landscapes, toxic byproducts, and resistance to restraint.

Hern finds the analogy written on the landscape. Modern cities do not merely grow; they spread outward in ragged, branching, increasingly irregular forms. In the fractal geometry of urban expansion, he sees an eerie correspondence with the borders of malignant tumors: suburbs and satellite developments extend beyond the original core, roads and utilities carry the process outward, and surrounding ecosystems are absorbed or degraded to sustain the growth. The similarity is not, for Hern, a matter of appearance alone. Fractal form by itself proves nothing. It matters because the form is joined to the behavior—rapid expansion, distant colonization, ecological invasion, destructive metabolism, and an apparent inability to stop.

The metaphor becomes most powerful when it is understood as a critique not of individual human beings but of the system humans have created. No one person clears the Amazon, warms the oceans, expands the global highway network, industrializes agriculture, or turns the atmosphere into a waste repository. Yet billions of people are embedded in systems that make ecological transformation appear normal, necessary, and unavoidable. A person drives to work because cities were built around automobiles. A family buys industrial food because local food systems have been displaced by global supply chains. A government supports extraction because employment, revenue, debt service, and geopolitical power depend on it. A corporation expands because remaining still is treated as failure.

This is the terrible strength of ecophagy: it operates through ordinary life. It does not require a conspiracy. It requires only that growth remain unquestioned.

Hern’s darkest proposition follows from this diagnosis. The danger is not simply that human activity will make the Earth ugly, depleted, or less hospitable in scattered places. Nor is it that the planet itself will die. The biosphere may continue in altered forms, and microorganisms adapted to extreme conditions may outlast much of the world familiar to us. The danger is that humanity may go on consuming its ecological host until the climate, water, soil, vegetation, and atmospheric conditions that sustain large, oxygen-dependent organisms no longer sustain us. In that sense, extinction need not come because humanity failed to recognize the danger. It may come because a civilization capable of recognizing the danger continued to reproduce it.

The Civilization of Positive Feedback

The modern world is often praised for its capacity to solve problems. It has reduced certain diseases, increased agricultural yields, extended life expectancy, connected continents, and created extraordinary technological capacities. Hern does not deny human ingenuity. His warning is that ingenuity without restraint can magnify destructive power faster than it produces wisdom.

Humanity’s historical success has depended in part on overcoming limits that restrained other species. Agriculture expanded the food supply. Medicine reduced mortality. Fossil energy multiplied productive power. Industrial systems extracted enormous quantities of material from the Earth and moved them across the planet. Modern sanitation, transportation, engineering, and communication allowed populations and cities to grow to scales that earlier societies could scarcely imagine.

But each success created new demands. More food supported more people. More energy enabled greater extraction. More roads opened more land. More wealth increased consumption. More cities required more water, food, concrete, metals, electricity, transportation, and waste disposal. The system did not settle into balance after achieving abundance. It accelerated.

Hern’s deeper point is that human culture has not abolished ecological limits; it has postponed and displaced them. Fossil energy, industrial systems, global trade, and technical capacity have allowed humanity to shift immediate limits outward—in time, across distant landscapes and ecosystems, and downward onto people with the least power to avoid them. Local scarcity becomes distant extraction; pollution becomes someone else’s poisoned air or water; the costs of present abundance become future heat, fire, flood, debt, displacement, and illness. But a limit deferred is not a limit removed. The costs accumulate in the atmosphere, oceans, soils, forests, and bodies, then return as conditions that no technical system can fully control.

This is what makes Hern’s language of pathology so unsettling. The problem is not that human beings have needs. Every living creature does. The problem is that modern civilization has developed an economic and cultural order in which needs become markets, markets become growth imperatives, growth imperatives become political necessities, and political necessities become excuses for further ecological damage. Limits are experienced not as signals to change course but as inconveniences to overcome through more extraction, more technology, more debt, or expansion into another territory.

The ecophagic system is governed by positive feedback: its successes intensify the pressures that create its crises. Fossil energy permits sprawl, global trade, industrial agriculture, extraction, and mass consumption; these, in turn, destabilize the climate and exhaust ecosystems; the resulting instability then creates demand for more energy-intensive cooling, construction, transport, insurance, emergency response, military deployment, and technological management. What begins as a solution becomes another input into the machine that deepens the problem.

Consider the modern city. Cheap oil and abundant electricity allow a metropolitan region to spread far beyond the limits of local food, water, and energy. Highways make distant suburbs possible; suburbs require more roads, vehicles, concrete, power lines, water systems, and commercial development; each expansion consumes open land and often some of the agricultural land, wetlands, and forests on which the larger region depends. The city appears to have solved its limits by reaching outward. In fact, it has enlarged its dependence on distant ecosystems and fossil energy. Hern calls this condition “retroactive heterotrophicity”: modern human communities sustain themselves not on energy captured in the present by living systems, but on fossil sunlight stored over hundreds of millions of years. That temporary escape from ordinary ecological limits permits further growth, which in turn requires still greater flows of energy and material.

Industrial agriculture offers another example. Fossil fuels make it possible to manufacture synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, power irrigation pumps and farm machinery, refrigerate food, process it, package it, and transport it across continents. This system can produce enormous quantities of food, helping sustain large urban populations and enabling further growth. Yet it also binds food security to petroleum and natural-gas inputs, degrades soil in many places, drains aquifers, intensifies land conversion, and contributes to the warming that brings heat, drought, flood, wildfire, pest pressures, and unstable growing seasons. Climate disruption then encourages more irrigation, more energy-intensive cooling and refrigeration, more chemical inputs, more engineered infrastructure, and greater reliance on global supply chains already vulnerable to disruption. The system responds to problems generated by industrial throughput with further throughput.

Cooling illustrates the feedback at the scale of everyday life. As heat becomes more dangerous, air conditioning changes from a convenience to a condition of survival, especially for older people, infants, people with chronic illness, and those living in dense urban heat islands. But when cooling is supplied mainly by carbon-intensive electricity, rising heat produces rising electrical demand; that demand can increase emissions, strain grids, and require expanded generation and transmission systems. The immediate remedy is real and necessary—people must be protected from heat—but a society that relies on ever-greater energy consumption without rapidly decarbonizing and redesigning its buildings, cities, and electrical systems risks treating a symptom in a way that worsens the disease. The same heat that increases the need for cooling also damages infrastructure, reduces labor capacity, strains hospitals, and heightens wildfire risk.

Disaster reconstruction can become a fourth loop. A flood, fire, hurricane, or heat emergency damages homes, roads, bridges, electrical systems, hospitals, and water infrastructure. Recovery requires energy, materials, transport, financing, insurance, and labor. Yet repeated reconstruction may restore the vulnerable pattern rather than change it: rebuilding in high-risk areas, replacing infrastructure designed for an older climate, and drawing public resources away from maintenance, prevention, public housing, and ecological restoration. As disasters arrive more quickly than households and institutions can absorb them, insurance retreats, debt rises, maintenance is deferred, and the next shock lands on a weaker social foundation. The crisis is no longer a discrete event; it becomes a ratchet.

These loops do not mean that air conditioning, agriculture, infrastructure, or disaster relief are themselves mistakes. They are indispensable parts of life in a world already shaped by industrial civilization and climate disruption. The point is that necessities become ecophagic when they are subordinated to a system whose only answer to the damage caused by expansion is further expansion. Hern’s diagnosis is not that human beings should cease using knowledge and tools. It is that technological power without ecological limits, public responsibility, and a willingness to reduce destructive forms of consumption becomes a mechanism by which civilization accelerates its own injury.

A civilization organized this way becomes increasingly unable to distinguish wealth from liquidation. It counts timber as income but not the diminished forest that held soil, stored carbon, moderated water, and sustained innumerable forms of life. It counts a new development as growth but not the habitat, groundwater, fertile land, wetlands, or flood protection it replaces. It counts the rebuilding that follows a fire, flood, or storm as economic activity but not the lost home, damaged health, displacement, depleted public budget, fractured community memory, and reduced capacity to recover before the next disaster. It counts energy production but not the atmospheric conditions, stable seasons, water systems, and food-producing landscapes that the emissions from that production destabilize.

The accounting is false because it ignores the host: the living Earth whose soils, forests, oceans, climate, watersheds, and biological diversity make every form of human wealth possible. When those conditions are consumed or degraded, a society may record an increase in output even as it liquidates the ecological and social inheritance on which any durable prosperity depends.

The World Beneath the Economy

The future imagined by conventional politics and economics assumes that the economy is the foundation and the environment is one sector within it. There are economic interests, environmental interests, energy interests, agricultural interests, and development interests, all competing for public attention. Hern’s work reverses that hierarchy. The biosphere is not one interest among many. It is the condition that makes all interests possible.

There is no economy without water, climate stability, soil, energy, laboring bodies, disease control, food systems, transportation routes, and ecological systems capable of absorbing some portion of human waste. There is no technological civilization independent of minerals, land, electricity, manufacturing, labor, education, social order, and a living planet capable of sustaining the populations that operate it. No financial abstraction, virtual environment, artificial-intelligence system, or private fortune can manufacture these foundations once they have been destroyed.

This is why the obsession with technological rescue can become a form of denial. Technology is indispensable. Humanity will need improved energy systems, medical research, environmental monitoring, resilient buildings, better water management, public-health infrastructure, communications, and agricultural methods. But technology cannot eliminate ecology. It can only operate within ecological conditions.

In its social form, ecophagy does not only consume forests, water, soil, and climate stability; it begins to sort human beings according to who will be protected from the consequences and who will be left to bear them. A machine can forecast drought, map a floodplain, or calculate heat risk, but it cannot decide whether a family is owed cooling, relocation, insurance, or care. When such questions are reduced to risk scores, eligibility rules, or cost-benefit calculations, the destruction of the ecological host is followed by the administrative sorting of its human casualties.

The fantasy that technology will allow humanity to escape the limits of Earth has particular appeal because it preserves the emotional structure of growth. It allows people to imagine that they need not choose between present consumption and future survival. Some future invention—artificial intelligence, a new energy source, orbital industry, a distant settlement, or a virtual alternative—will supposedly dissolve the conflict. But a future promise is not a substitute for air, water, soil, food, shelter, public institutions, or a stable climate.

The dream of escape can therefore function as an alibi. It permits the continuation of the very system whose consequences it claims eventually to transcend. A society that imagines colonies beyond Earth while tolerating the decay of water systems, public housing, hospitals, forests, and democratic institutions is not demonstrating confidence in the future. It is refusing responsibility for the present.

The Future of an Unchecked Diagnosis

If Homo Ecophagus is correct, then the danger ahead is not only ecological breakdown. It is the political form that ecological breakdown may take.

The long emergency will not necessarily arrive as a universal moment in which every system fails at once. It is more likely to unfold unevenly: some places retaining reliable power, water, medical care, food security, and the means to recover after disaster, while others endure recurring heat, smoke, flood, debt, insurance withdrawal, damaged infrastructure, and forced movement. The result may be not a clean division between survival and collapse, but an increasingly unequal distribution of safety.

Private insulation is not collective survival. A wealthy neighborhood may purchase backup power, air filtration, insurance, private security, or the option to relocate, but it remains dependent on regional electricity, transportation, food systems, labor, public health, functioning ecosystems, and social stability. No enclave can fully remove itself from a biosphere or society in decline.

In its social form, ecophagy does not only consume forests, water, soil, and climate stability; it begins to sort human beings according to who will be protected from the consequences and who will be left to bear them. Risk models, insurance systems, eligibility rules, and cost-benefit calculations can make abandonment appear technical rather than political. A family becomes a risk profile; a neighborhood becomes a cost center; a damaged community becomes a problem of “managed retreat.” The destruction of the ecological host is then followed by the administrative sorting of its human casualties.

From Expansion to Repair

The answer to Hern’s diagnosis cannot be self-hatred, despair, or a romantic fantasy of returning to an untouched past. Hern does not offer either withdrawal from modernity or confidence that technology alone will save us. He argues instead that a species whose culture has become ecophagic must understand the pathology it has created and alter its course before that pathology becomes terminal. Human beings cannot erase the population, infrastructure, and technical systems already dependent on a complex industrial world. But neither can they continue treating those systems as ends in themselves. The task, as Hern’s diagnosis implies, is more difficult and more fundamental: to place technology, production, settlement, and consumption within ecological limits and direct them toward preserving, rather than consuming, the conditions of life.

The first requirement is to abandon the idea that growth is synonymous with health. Growth can be useful, necessary, or life-enhancing in particular contexts. But indefinite material expansion on a finite planet is neither a realistic nor a serious definition of prosperity. A society becomes healthier not merely when it produces more, but when it protects the conditions of life: clean water, breathable air, a stable climate, fertile land, functioning ecosystems, public health, secure housing, care, education, meaningful work, and democratic participation.

The second requirement is to accept limits without converting them into cruelty. Limits are real. Not every coastline can be defended forever. Not every water-intensive industry can continue. Not every destructive form of extraction, consumption, transportation, settlement, or luxury can be preserved. But accepting limits must not mean displacing poor people while the wealthy retain extravagant consumption. It must mean that the greatest burdens fall first on the practices that consume the most and contribute least to collective survival.

Repair is less glamorous than the rockets, platforms, and speculative promises celebrated by contemporary innovation culture. It requires maintenance schedules, public budgets, trained workers, regulation, democratic institutions, ecological restoration, social trust, and commitments long enough to outlast the present moment. Yet repair is the opposite of ecophagy. It interrupts the habit of treating the world as raw material and begins to treat it as a shared inheritance.

Repair means restoring forests, wetlands, soils, fisheries, watersheds, and damaged ecosystems. It means redesigning cities for lower material throughput and greater resilience. It means protecting public health, food distribution, sanitation, electricity, housing, and transportation as the material basis of citizenship. It means building institutions through which people can participate in decisions about risk, sacrifice, relocation, and protection. It means using technology to support life rather than to conceal the consequences of abandoning it.

Most importantly, repair means recovering a moral truth that the ecophagic civilization has obscured: human beings do not stand above the world they transform. We are inside it. The atmosphere enters our lungs. Water enters our bodies. Soil becomes food. Forests shape rain. Insects pollinate crops. Workers maintain the systems that keep cities alive. Communities preserve knowledge and care that no market can fully measure.

Earth is not an infinite sink into which a civilization can cast the remnants of its abundance. It is, in the material sense that matters here, a closed system: what is extracted, manufactured, burned, sprayed, discarded, and dispersed does not disappear. It changes form and circulates. Microplastics now move through oceans, soil, air, food, and human bodies; persistent industrial chemicals travel through water, wildlife, and tissue far from their original sites of production. The apparent boundary between environmental contamination and human contamination is not a boundary at all. It is the same damaged system viewed from two different places.

The Earth is not the stage on which humanity performs its drama of progress. It is the condition of every human future.

Hern’s diagnosis is grim because the disease is advanced. But diagnosis is not fatalism. The purpose of naming a pathology is not to dwell on its horror; it is to understand what must change. Humanity’s future will not be secured by proving that it can consume more efficiently, escape farther, calculate faster, or automate more completely. It will be secured only if it stops devouring the systems that sustain it.

The alternative is not merely environmental damage. It is a civilization that grows ever more powerful while dismantling the living world that makes such power possible.

A Kabuki Play

"What we have, in what passes for US democracy in 2012, is a kabuki play that Cicero put to papyrus 1948 years earlier. All historical empires and war aggressors have used propaganda to claim their looting and police states were necessary and helpful to the 99%. Instead, a sorrowful history tells us they were almost always for the sole benefit of the 1%." - Albert Bates
