The Refusal of Reality
In a world where the biosphere is being pushed beyond the conditions that made complex civilization possible—where heat becomes lethal, fire turns whole regions into smoke, water systems fail, coastlines retreat, crops falter, and ordinary families are priced out of safety itself—some of the richest men alive have chosen a different horizon. They promise robot servants, digital immortality, orbital factories, Martian cities, superintelligence, and an expanding human civilization among the stars.
Their future is enormous. It is large enough to make the present look small.
But the present is not small. It is where bodies live. It is where heat kills, where floodwater enters homes, where medications need refrigeration, where a mortgage depends on insurance, where a hospital needs power and staffing, and where a city’s future may turn on whether a water main, a bridge, or an electrical substation can be repaired before the next disaster arrives.
The crisis of our time is not only ecological, economic, or political. It is also a crisis of imagination. At the moment when collective survival depends on maintaining the material world we share, the people with the greatest wealth and influence are selling a story of transcendence: the claim that technology will allow us to outgrow scarcity, ecology, politics, the body, and perhaps even the planet itself.
That story has many forms. It promises a virtual world richer than everyday life, financial systems beyond public control, artificial intelligence that will solve social problems too complex for politics, biotechnology that will defeat aging, and settlements on other planets that will make Earth’s limits irrelevant. Its details change from one conference stage to the next. Its structure does not. The world is broken; therefore, stop trying to repair it. The future will rescue us.
This is not simply optimism. It is an ideology of escape.
The Politics of Elsewhere
Jonathan Taplin’s The End of Reality examines a cohort of technology billionaires and investors who have helped elevate crypto, the metaverse, Mars colonization, and transhumanism into a political vision. Taplin’s concern is not that people dream of innovation, space exploration, or longer lives. It is that these projects are presented as substitutes for democratic responsibility while concentrating power in the hands of the people promoting them. The fantasy of technological liberation becomes inseparable from deregulation, monopolization, weakened labor power, hostility to public institutions, and the conversion of shared social life into privately owned platforms.
Adam Becker’s More Everything Forever traces a related worldview through the intellectual networks of longtermism, effective altruism, rationalism, singularitarianism, and transhumanism. In Becker’s account, the promise of artificial general intelligence, cosmic expansion, radical life extension, mind uploading, and limitless technological growth is not merely a collection of eccentric predictions. It is an ideology he calls technological salvation: an attempt to convert every moral, political, ecological, and human problem into a technical problem awaiting an eventual technical solution.
The appeal is obvious. Political problems are slow, frustrating, and morally compromising. They require collective action among people who disagree. They require public institutions that must be funded, accountable, repaired, and sometimes transformed. They require us to decide who receives protection, who bears costs, what industries must shrink, what luxuries cannot be preserved, and what obligations wealth imposes on those who possess it.
Technology, by contrast, can be imagined as clean, inevitable, and above conflict. It promises a future in which difficult decisions have already been made by machines, markets, or founders. In its most extreme form, this worldview recasts hunger as a logistics problem, poverty as a failure of innovation, climate change as a future engineering challenge, and politics as an annoying bottleneck. The body becomes obsolete hardware. Earth itself becomes a temporary platform from which a sufficiently advanced civilization will eventually depart.
The seduction lies partly in scale. A city deciding how to keep its elderly residents cool during a heat wave is an ordinary problem. A company promising to build artificial general intelligence is a civilization-scale spectacle. A county organizing buyouts for flood-prone homes is bureaucratically difficult and morally fraught. A billionaire describing a million-person city on Mars appears to be thinking on behalf of the species.
But scale can conceal evasion. The grander the promise, the easier it becomes to overlook the actual conditions that make life possible.
A rocket is visible: a spectacle of flame, speed, conquest, and limitless horizons. A water system is buried beneath the street, noticed mainly when it fails—yet it is the infrastructure that allows a city to remain alive.
A virtual world can be sold as freedom, escape, and limitless possibility. A public-housing authority must do the essential work of keeping people housed when the market will not.
A machine that promises to solve everything is more glamorous than a trained repair crew replacing pipes before they fail.
Yet pipes, repair crews, cooling centers, public transit, clinics, grids, schools, food systems, drainage, housing, and public trust are the things from which a society is made.
The Future as Alibi
The most important fact about the technological future is not whether every prophecy comes true. Most predictions about the future will fail in one way or another. The important question is what those predictions permit in the present.
A prophecy does not need to be accurate to exercise power. It only needs to attract capital, redirect public attention, justify political priorities, and make certain obligations appear obsolete.
The technological-salvation narrative does this with remarkable efficiency. If artificial intelligence is destined to create unimaginable wealth, then present inequality can be treated as temporary. If the future will offer “universal basic compute,” then demands for housing, health care, income security, and labor rights can be reframed as unimaginative relics of an older world. If humanity’s destiny lies among the stars, then preserving the Earth can seem parochial rather than essential. If virtual reality will make life richer, then the degradation of real neighborhoods, workplaces, public spaces, democratic institutions, and the living systems that sustain them—clean air, water, soil, forests, and a stable climate—can be made to seem less urgent. If an eventual technological miracle will make material scarcity disappear, then the unequal distribution of material security today can be tolerated as the price of progress.
Becker describes how the ideology of technological salvation reduces the world’s complexity to a single imperative: accelerate technological development, because sufficiently advanced technology will solve everything else. The result is a politics of deferral. Present harm becomes morally tolerable because it is placed beside a hypothetical future of abundance so vast that ordinary suffering is made to appear trivial by comparison.
This is one of the darkest features of longtermist and singularitarian rhetoric: the farther into the future one looks, the easier it becomes to stop seeing the people already here and the ecological polycrisis already imperiling the conditions of their lives. The imagined descendants of the distant future may number in the trillions, quadrillions, or more. They are abstract, compliant, and permanently available to be invoked. The people already alive—the poor, the displaced, the uninsured, the chronically ill, the worker breathing wildfire smoke, the renter facing eviction after disaster, the resident of a town with collapsing public services—are inconveniently specific. They make demands now.
The far future has no such demands. It cannot vote. It cannot strike. It cannot ask why a society capable of launching rockets and training billion-parameter models cannot guarantee reliable water, affordable housing, functioning public transit, medical care, or a safe place to go when the air becomes dangerous to breathe.
The future becomes an alibi: a moral language through which the powerful can portray their accumulation of wealth and control as service to humanity.
This is why technological inevitability is so politically useful. If a future is inevitable, no one has to take responsibility for choosing it. If artificial intelligence is unstoppable, then its builders can frame themselves not as people making investment and design decisions but as stewards of history. If crypto is the unavoidable successor to public money, then its promoters need not defend the fraud, speculation, energy use, and wealth concentration that accompany it. If space colonization is necessary for species survival, then immense expenditures can be described as prudence rather than ambition, prestige, or escapism.
But there is nothing inevitable about the technologies a society develops, the purposes to which it puts them, or the people who control them. Technology is not a weather system. It is not an autonomous force rolling through history beyond human choice. It is built with resources, electricity, labor, law, research, public subsidy, land, minerals, and institutional permission. It is directed by people who make decisions about what to fund, whose work to automate, which risks to socialize, which data to extract, which communities to serve, and which harms to accept.
The future is political before it is technological.
The World That Cannot Be Uploaded
The long emergency is not a single event. It is the slow erosion of recoverability.
A flood is not only water entering a home. It is whether or not insurance pays. Whether the deductible can be covered. Whether contractors are available. Whether a tenant has somewhere to go. Whether a bridge remains passable. Whether a school reopens. Whether an employer keeps people on payroll. Whether medication can be replaced. Whether the next fire, heat wave, storm, or smoke season arrives before the previous loss has been absorbed.
The deeper danger is not that every place suddenly becomes uninhabitable. It is that more places become difficult to inhabit on terms that ordinary people can afford. Insurance premiums rise. Coverage narrows. Policies are not renewed. Homes become harder to mortgage or sell. Repairs become more expensive. Public systems are asked to do more while their tax base, workforce, and maintenance capacity weaken. A household may remain technically employed and still become less secure because the costs rising fastest are the costs of staying alive: rent, cooling, food, transport, repairs, insurance, debt service, health care, evacuation, and relocation.
This is where the fantasy future collides with the physical world.
No one can cool an apartment with a promise of artificial general intelligence.
No one can drink an image generated by a chatbot.
No one can finance a move out of a flood zone with the prospect of digital immortality.
No one can keep a hospital functioning through a heat emergency with a theory that innovation will eventually transcend scarcity.
No one can rebuild a town with a crypto token, a manufactured elsewhere, or a claim that Mars will someday serve as a backup civilization.
The body is not an inconvenience to be abstracted away. It is the site of every emergency. It needs breathable air, drinkable water, adequate food, shelter from heat and cold, access to care, transportation, sanitation, sleep, human contact, and some reasonable confidence that tomorrow’s necessities will still be available.
The same is true of civilization. Civilization is not an app. It is not a server farm or a financial instrument or an abstract growth curve. It is a vast and fragile mesh of maintained relationships: workers who know how to repair a transformer; nurses who can reach a hospital; truck drivers who can deliver food; water operators who understand aging infrastructure; teachers, electricians, sanitation workers, farmers, technicians, engineers, caregivers, and public employees whose skills keep ordinary life from becoming an emergency.
That is why the central question is not whether technology is good or bad. It is whether technology is organized to support life or to monetize an escape from responsibility.
A useful technology can help forecast fire behavior, identify grid failures, improve medical diagnosis, coordinate emergency communication, reduce energy waste, monitor water quality, or make buildings safer and more efficient. But none of these applications eliminates the need for public capacity. They depend on it. They work only if there are functioning institutions, trained people, reliable infrastructure, democratic oversight, and a commitment to treating basic survival as a public obligation rather than a premium service.
The fantasy begins when a tool becomes a substitute for the world it is supposed to serve.
Private Safety Is Not Civilization
The technological elite often speaks in the language of independence: the entrepreneur as self-made, the investor as sovereign, the platform beyond public control, and the settlement beyond Earth as an escape from earthly limits and collective obligation. But wealth is not independence. It is a claim on a functioning world.
The wealthy can buy insulation. They can purchase backup power, multiple homes, air filtration, private security, superior insurance, private health care, relocation options, water storage, and political access. They can move before property values collapse. They can absorb deductibles that would bankrupt other households. They can use private transportation when public transit fails. They can purchase distance from danger.
But they cannot purchase civilization in isolation.
A bunker is not a society. A rocket to Mars offers no escape from a collapsing biosphere. A private server farm is not public-health infrastructure. A fortified estate cannot replace the electrical grid, the roads, the ports, the food chain, the trained workforce, the courts, the schools, the hospitals, the maintenance crews, the ecosystems, or the basic social trust on which all wealth ultimately rests.
This is the central error of exit ideology. It mistakes unequal access to protection for freedom from dependence.
The person who owns a private generator still depends on fuel, manufacturing, electrical expertise, roads, labor, supply chains, and a social order stable enough to provide replacement parts. The person who owns an air-filtered home still depends on a regional power system and a labor force that can keep it functioning. The person who owns a private clinic still depends on public medical education, pharmaceuticals, sanitation, emergency transport, and the wider health of the society outside its doors. The person who believes a Mars settlement offers a backup plan for humanity depends on an Earth capable of producing the machinery, food, energy, knowledge, materials, and human cooperation that such a settlement would require.
Wealth can buy temporary insulation. It cannot secure anyone against the failure of the systems from which that wealth was extracted.
The long emergency therefore does not create a clean division between the protected and the abandoned. It creates a more unstable hierarchy. Some people will have more buffers than others. Some neighborhoods will receive flood barriers, backup power, resilient construction, air filtration, cooling, and public investment. Others will face disinvestment, unaffordable insurance, repeated evacuation, failing services, debt, and forced movement. But even the protected enclaves remain dependent on the larger systems around them.
The question is whether those systems are rebuilt for everyone or allowed to decay into a patchwork of private refuges and managed abandonment.
Against the Romance of Escape
The choice is not between technology and an imagined return to a simpler past. There is no return. As the climate system destabilizes and the biosphere is pushed further beyond the conditions under which human civilization developed, a nuclear-armed, globally interconnected industrial civilization cannot retreat into nostalgia. It will need extraordinary technical competence in clean energy, medicine, communication, construction, agriculture, water management, public health, and disaster response.
But technical competence without democratic purpose becomes another form of hierarchy.
The future worth defending is not one in which a small class imagines it can flee a dying Earth, outlast the body, withdraw into manufactured worlds while the real one burns, or remake the universe into an engine for its own desires. It is one in which human beings retain the material conditions of life on a habitable planet: breathable air, drinkable water, food, shelter from lethal heat, access to care, and the means to recover when disaster comes. It is one in which ordinary people can survive the next heat wave without losing their homes; receive medical care when smoke overwhelms a city; relocate from danger without becoming homeless; drink clean water from a reliable system; recover from a flood without lifelong debt; and remain part of a political community that has not decided they are disposable.
That future will not arrive through a single invention. It will be built through choices that are less glamorous than rockets and less profitable than speculative financial systems.
It means public housing in safer places before displacement becomes mass homelessness. It means buyouts and managed retreat funded at levels that allow people to move rather than merely lose. It means resilient, decarbonized electricity; cooling and clean-air access; protected food distribution; functioning public health systems; maintenance of roads, water systems, transit, and hospitals; income security for displaced workers and communities; and democratic control over the technological systems that increasingly govern work, information, energy, and public life.
This requires recognizing that some forms of consumption, extraction, speculative development, and private luxury can no longer be preserved. It requires refusing to let “innovation” become a euphemism for transferring risk downward. It requires treating social resilience not as a luxury feature for wealthy districts but as the ordinary condition of citizenship.
The true opposite of collapse is not immortality, simulation, or escape. It is repair.
Repair is not romantic. It does not promise transcendence. It means repairing not only roads, grids, homes, hospitals, and public institutions, but protecting and restoring the living systems beneath all of them: water, soil, forests, wetlands, oceans, biodiversity, and the climatic conditions on which human life still depends. It requires budgets, institutions, maintenance schedules, trained workers, public legitimacy, and the willingness to spend money before catastrophe makes spending unavoidable. It requires accepting limits without converting them into a justification for cruelty. It requires deciding that retreat must not become eviction, that rationing must not become hunger, that emergency planning must not become authoritarian rule, and that the unraveling of the living world must not become permission for the wealthy to preserve comfort while everyone else absorbs the loss.
The technological future may yet contain marvels. It may produce tools that reduce suffering, expand knowledge, restore ecosystems, improve medicine, and make a more livable world possible. But none of that is guaranteed by the existence of technology itself.
Nor is it a sign of health to become well adjusted to a world in which poisoned air, failing water, permanent displacement, private fortification, and ecological loss are treated as normal conditions of life. A society that can imagine digital immortality while accepting preventable abandonment in the present is not demonstrating maturity or realism. It is learning to call its sickness inevitable.
The question is not whether we will have more powerful machines.
The question is whether, as the world becomes harder to inhabit, we will use our remaining intelligence, wealth, and technical capacity to maintain and restore the conditions of shared life—or whether we will build more elaborate stories about why we no longer have to.
