I was going to post on that capitalism article I mentioned in my previous blog entry, but this video I was making on child labor took on a life of its own and demanded my entire Sunday.

Human rights organizations have documented child labor in USA. According to a 2009 petition by Human Rights Watch: “Hundreds of thousands of children are employed as farmworkers in the United States, often working 10 or more hours a day. They are often exposed to dangerous pesticides, experience high rates of injury, and suffer fatalities at five times the rate of other working youth. Their long hours contribute to alarming drop-out rates. Government statistics show that barely half ever finish high school. According to the National Safety Council, agriculture is the second most dangerous occupation in the United States. However, current US child labor laws allow child farmworkers to work longer hours, at younger ages, and under more hazardous conditions than other working youths. While children in other sectors must be 12 to be employed and cannot work more than 3 hours on a school day, in agriculture, children can work at age 12 for unlimited hours before and after school.” They would work two to three jobs depending on their age.
I know the problem is rampant overseas and it’s only going to get worse in America with 1 in 5 children living under the poverty level and gross inequality increasing all the time…
There is relief on the way with the Payment In Kind Act. Student loans will be bundled into securities. Investors will buy these securities and the debtors can repay with money or with time. Debtors lacking funds but with marketable skills may get positions that actually pay a subsistence wage as they work off their loans. Less talented debtors will get shock collars to help them remember to not bruise the fruit as they pick it. It will be positive for the environment as agricultural production will require much less herbicide with so many hoe hands available at such economical rates. There won’t be a need for the spanish speaking native americans that currently supply most of the “farm labor”. Savvy investors are taking a close look at Electronic Motivational Device producers as the adaptation of dog training collars to the work force is expected play an important roll in the new debt collection system. Many of these child labor inequities presented here will be a thing of the past when the Payment In Kind Act becomes law. Proponents of the new legislation are touting this as one of the greatest “jobs bills” in US history. Call your congresspuppet today and let them know where you stand on this important issue.
